I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you cannot find the main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once you have stopped the problem from worsening, give our emergency plumber a call, at any time of the day or night. We will be there quickly to solve the problem.

In the meantime, start wiping up any water, position a container to catch drips, and remove significant items from the affected area. If the mains water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
