I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have service valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating tap below or beside the cistern. If you cannot find a tap, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains water shutoff tap to cut off all the water to your home.

Once you have stopped the leak from worsening, give our emergency plumber a call, at any time of the day or night. We’ll be there quickly to resolve the problem.

While you are waiting, clear away any significant things from the area, and mop up any water or place a bucket to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

Find a length of twine of some kind, and knot it onto the faucet aerator so that it drapes down to the bottom of the skink or basin. The drips will run down the twine and dribble off quietly.
