I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

While waiting, clear away any important possessions close to the leak, and clean up any water or put a bucket to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
