I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the water to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main water valve for your property. If you’re unable to locate the main valve to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside your house to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give us a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to fix the leak.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any important items close to the leak, and wipe up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
