I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you can’t find the water main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once you have stopped the leak from worsening, give our emergency plumber a call, any hour of the day or night. They will be there promptly to solve the problem.

While waiting, remove any important things from the area, and clean up any water or put a container to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
