I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main shutoff valve for your home. If you are unable to locate the main valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that’s done, give our plumber a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be with you rapidly to get things sorted.

While waiting for our emergency plumber to arrive, remove any important things, clean up any water, and place a container to catch drips. You should also switch off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
