I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you cannot locate the main isolation valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give our plumber a call, no matter what the day or time is. We will be there shortly to fix the leak.

While waiting, clear away any important things close to the leak, and wipe up any water or position a container to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
