I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest service valve or at the mains valve outside. If you cannot locate the water main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once that’s done, give our team a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We will be there shortly to fix the leak.

While you wait for our emergency plumber, remove any important things, clean up any water, and place a bucket to catch drips. You should also turn off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves as well.
