I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go immediately to the main shutoff valve for your property. If you’re unable to find the water valve to turn off, then you could try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give our plumber a call, no matter what the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to resolve the problem.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant items from the area, and mop up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
