I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you can’t locate the main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any time of the day or night. We will be at your place as soon as we can to save the day.

While you wait for our emergency plumber to arrive, clear away any significant items, mop up any water, and place a bucket to catch any drips. You should also switch off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
