I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

A lot of appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating valve below or beside the cistern. If you cannot locate a tap, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains isolating tap to cut off all the water to the home.

Once you have stopped the leak from worsening, give our emergency plumber a ring, any time of the day or night. They’ll be there promptly to resolve the issue.

While you are waiting, remove any important items close to the leak, and mop up any water or put a container to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.
