I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest service valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you can’t find the main isolation valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any important possessions from the area, and mop up any water or place a bucket to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.
