I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest service valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you cannot locate the water main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that is sorted, give us a ring, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be with you shortly to get things sorted.

While you are waiting, remove any important possessions from the area, and wipe up any water or put a bucket to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
