I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have service valves that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have a tap below or beside the cistern. If you can’t locate a valve, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains tap to cut off all the water to your property.

Once that’s sorted, give our plumber a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be with you promptly to fix the leak.

In the meantime, start cleaning up any water, place a bucket to catch drips, and clear away important things from the affected area. If the mains water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps as well.
