I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main water shutoff valve for your property. If you’re unable to locate the main valve to turn off, then you could try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once you have stopped the leak from getting worse, give our emergency plumber a call, any time of the day or night. We will be there rapidly to solve the issue.

In the meantime, start wiping up any water, position a container to catch any drips, and clear away important items from the affected area. If the property water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.
